Where to Start: Gardening with Natives, Prairieville

Host: Beaver's Abundance Native Plant Nursery & Eco-Boutique

Location: Beaver's Abundance Native Plant Nursery & Eco-Boutique, 17873 Old Jefferson Hwy, Prairieville, LA 70769

Are you interested in creating your own native garden but not quite sure where to start—or what will actually work in a Baton Rouge garden?

This class is for home gardeners who want to do the gardening themselves but would appreciate some local guidance along the way. Vilma of Provenance Potted Gardens will share practical information from her experience working with Louisiana native plants and landscaping residential gardens in the Baton Rouge area.

The goal is to help you better understand your options, organize your ideas, choose plants with more confidence, and leave with information you can use in your own garden.

1. Getting Started with Native Plants
We’ll begin with a short introduction to native plants and native gardening and then get into the plants themselves.

Participants will be introduced to a curated selection of Louisiana native plants that are especially useful for gardeners getting started with natives. Rather than simply providing a plant list, we’ll talk about why these plants are good choices—their garden value, growing conditions, wildlife benefits, adaptability and other characteristics that can make them easier to incorporate into a home landscape.

2. Creating Your Native Garden: Organizing the Process
Where do you begin when you are ready to create a garden? Vilma will walk participants through the basic process she uses to organize a native landscaping project. We’ll look at how to think about the existing space, sunlight and site conditions, garden goals, plant selection, quantities, placement and diversity.

3. Bring Your Garden Questions — Q&A
This is an important part of the class, so bring your questions!

Participants will have dedicated time to ask about their own gardens, native plant choices, challenging areas, plant combinations, starting a new bed, adding natives to an existing landscape, or other questions that have come up while gardening.

4. Break, Recap & Open Discussion
After a short break, we’ll recap some of the most useful ideas from the class and continue with an informal group discussion.

Practical Information to Take Home
Participants will receive prepared reference materials created for the class, including locally relevant information to use as they plan and work in their own gardens.

These materials are based on Vilma’s experience as a Baton Rouge landscaper working with native plants and are intended to be something you can refer back to—not just information you hear once during the presentation.

Come with your questions, your garden ideas and your curiosity about Louisiana native plants.
